Insurance planning for Haryana government employees
Government employees get service benefits, but they are rarely a complete plan. The first step is knowing exactly what your own service rules provide, then filling the gaps.
Start with what you already have
Ask your office (DDO) or check your service records for:
- Your pension arrangement, which depends on your joining date and the scheme that applies to you
- Any group insurance scheme deducted from salary, and its cover amount
- Medical reimbursement or cashless facilities for you and dependants, and whether parents are included
- What continues after retirement and what stops
Write the actual figures down. We do not assume them; benefits differ by department, cadre and joining date.
Where gaps usually appear
- Life cover: group schemes are often small compared with a home loan and children’s education costs
- Health after retirement: check what medical facility continues after retirement and plan a personal policy before age makes it costly or hard to get
- Retirement income: if you are in a contribution-based pension, the final amount depends on contributions and returns; see the NPS guide
- Spouse and parents: dependants not covered by your service scheme
How much term cover?
A common starting point is 10–30 times annual income (about 20 times as a working guide), adjusted for loans, goals and existing assets.
Subtract only what you are sure the family will receive (written in your service records), not what you hope for.
Practical points
- Buy term cover while young and healthy; premiums are fixed at the start for level term plans
- Keep nominations updated in both service records and insurance policies
- Do not surrender old savings policies without checking the loss first; see endowment policy review
- Tax benefits depend on the regime you choose each year; see 80C vs 80D
Frequently asked
My department already insures me. Do I need more?
Compare the actual group cover with your loans and goals. If it falls short, a personal term plan fills the gap and stays with you even after you leave service.
